Seed Potatoes & Onion Sets

We carry a wonderful selection of seed potato and onion sets.

Planting Potatoes:

Plant in May, two weeks after the last killer frost.  Plant tubers 4 in. (10 cm.) deep and cover with soil.  Plant 8 - 12 in. (20-30 cm.) apart.

Potato Scab:

Common scab, Russet Scab, and Acid Scab are unsightly diseases of potato tubers that can adversely affect the grade and cooking quality.  Scab can survive indefinitely on decaying plant residue in the soil, on roots of living plants, and in animal manure.  Scab can spread by rain, wind-blown soil, and infected tubers.  Scab is generally more sever in light, sandy or gravel soils that dry quickly.

Prevention depends on a combination of practices:

  • Avoid planting infected tubers

  • Increase the time between successive potato crops

  • Maintain high soil moisture levels during and after tuber sets - 4 - 9 weeks

  • Avoid over-liming of soil, which increases soil pH

  • Soil treatments include sulphur and acidic fertilizers to increase the soil's acidity

  • Not all of the varieties that we carry are listed here.  Some varieties listed here may not be available.
